Derek Middleton is one of the leaders of post-World War II English abstraction, championed by the Redfern Gallery. Tachist Movement.

Biography

Born in Shanghai in 1915 and died in Paris in 1983, Derek Middleton studied Arts in Munich just before the Second World War.

He settles in London. His first figurative works were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1952. He then moved towards abstraction and exhibited with The London Group in 1956.

In 1957 he was one of the notable painters of the Tachiste Metavisuel movement and the key exhibition of the same name organized by the Redfern Gallery.

His career took an international turn, he exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. He then moved to Paris in 1958.

Derek Middleton's works are held by the British Museum, the Liverpool and Manchester City Art Galleries and the Cleveland Museum of Modern Art.
