Biography
Hervé Di Rosa was born in Sète (France) in 1959. He lives and works in Paris, Mexico City and travels the world.
After his studies at the National School of Decorative Arts, he had his first Parisian exhibition, "Finishing Beautifully", in 1981. He also had shows in Amsterdam and Dusseldorf, and then at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.
Awarded by the Medici foundation, he lived in New York for two years, and had a show at the Barbara Gladstone Gallery. He took part in the Paris Biennial in 1985, for which he also designed the poster.
In 198,9 Hervé di Rosa collaborated for the first time with local craftsmen, producing two serigraphs in a workshop for commercial prints in Tunis.
In 2000, he founded the International Museum of the Modest Arts in Sète.
From the Sogetsu Kai Kan Foundation in Tokyo to the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, via the Evo gallery in Santa Fe, the artist travelled the world and got to know the cultures and expressions styles of each country where he stayed.
He is with Richard Di Rosa, François Boisrond, Rémi Blanchard and Robert Combas, one of the main personalities of the French movement of the"figuration libre", that renewed painting in 1980s, borrowing elements of comics, rock culture and graffiti.
The vivacity and the tones of his work make him an artist and globe-trotter inspired by the cultures of the world, having taken a true initiatory journey: Miami, Mexico, Africa, Cuba, Israel, Vietnam, South Africa, Haiti, Tunisia...
The artist is part of his time with his colorful graphic style, and a body of work which makes reference to popular arts. He claims his membership in an urban mass culture.
