Artwork location: France
This ink drawing, very close to abstraction, nevertheless suggests a port, mountains and boats at anchor. It is a characteristic example of the work of Jean Bazaine, whose non-figurative compositions are often extracted from preparatory works inspired by reality. These visions of reality are then reworked until only the significant shapes and lines remain. The sailboat on the right of the drawing, reduced to two vertical and oblique lines and a rounded shape, clearly shows how the artist simplifies reality with a successful requirement.
This drawing by Jean Bazaine was executed in ink on Arche paper, of which only the French part of the watermark can be seen. It is enhanced by a beautiful frame with a dark grey canvas mount with black English bevel, and a thin black reed rod.

Works in prints from Jean Bazaine
Presentation
Jean Bazaine studied in several Parisian academies and institutions: Académie Julian, Paul Landowski and the Sorbonne, where he attended Henri Focillon's lesson, a famous history of art specialist.
At the age of 20, Jean opted for painting, he imitated great paintings from Musée du Louvre and showed a lot of interest in theater. During the International exhibition of Paris in 1937, he designed a fresco with his friend Jean Le Moal, he also did stained glass, first of a long series and re-did the decor, costumes for theater plays staged by Maurice Jacquemont.
Jean Bazaine's works are presented in several exhibitions in Europe since 1946 in Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Jean Bazaine is considered as one of the main representatives of the non-figuration movement.
1958 onwards, Jean Bazaine enjoyed several great retrospectives in many European countries, the most famous being in 1965 at the National Modern Art museum in Paris.
