Presentation
He was a student at the School of Arts of Shandong from 1978 to 1981 where he got an academic training in Western art, imparted particularly by Chinese teachers who came back to teach in China after having followed the tradition of the "Journey to the West" - and particularly in France. He became afterwards a student at the Academy of Fine Arts of Shandong from which he graduated in 1985, the following year he held a job as an assistant.
From 1986 to 1988 he was a researcher at China Central Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1989 he moved to France.
He then spent his life between China and France.
After 1999, he got his work exposed in several museums of China. Personal exhibitions of his work were presented at the Shanghai Museum in 2003 and in 2006 as well as in several Museums of Beijing in 2006. In 2007, he made a spectacular 6 meter long painting for the Opera of Beijing.
In July 2006, Wang Yan Cheng was named knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
The museum of Montparnasse exhibited in 2010 a selection of some of his recent work which were afterwards exposed in Beijing as well.
Since 2000 his works were acquired by major public collectors in China: The He Xiangning Museum In Shenzhen, The Museum of Fine Arts of Shenzhen, The Institute of Shenzhen, Guangdong Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts of Shangdong and the Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing.
His work is a continuation of that of his elders, Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun. He is heir of the ancient Chinese tradition of landscape painting as well as the formal freedom of Western abstraction.
