Biography

Artist Statement:

STATEMENT

My artworks are about bringing life's kaleidoscopic moments into focus. Each piece woven with an orchestra of color and texture they are a vivid, enveloping, display. Intimate angles are utilized as a story on canvas unfolds. They are Contemporary Impressionism in their approach. Working with oil paint, straight from the tube, loose brushstrokes are applied with a lyrical flourish, creating soft edges as the subject is unveiled. My work embodies the joy of living and invites the viewer to join me for a stroll and share in the visual biography of life they offer.

Living in California, Sydney concentrates on painting and teaching workshops. Her paintings are represented nationally and can be found as far abroad as France.

Today, Hall lives in San Luis Obispo, California.

...dream your space into reality...

BIOGRAPHY

Sydney Hall was born in Washington, DC and raised in Virginia. From a young age she had the palpable desire to express herself through art. With all of the arts of Washington close at hand, there was a plethora of fodder for her artistic inspiration.

Sydney studied foundation art at a local community college and then painting and printmaking at VCU. Further studies in portrait and figure from the Virginia Museum Studio School and Richmond Visual Art Center as well as numerous workshops with master artists were also incorporated into her educational background.

A professional artist for over twenty years, Sydney's paintings have a flair for finding beauty in unexpected places and ordinary objects. She feels an artist's life is essentially about sharing and as each component emerges there is a juxtaposition with the artwork and the paintings themselves which reveals the engaging elements of our everyday lives.

Professional/Teaching Experience:

Sydney studied foundation art at a local community college and then painting and printmaking at VCU. Further studies in portrait and figure from the Virginia Museum Studio School and Richmond Visual Art Center as well as numerous workshops with master artists were also incorporated into her educational background. The most prevalent of her expanded training was in the search for a better understanding of light and color and how to best express this through paint. She then discovered some artists who would give her extensive knowledge into uncovering the nuances in this arena. They in turn, had trained under artist Henry Henshe who started and ran the Cape Cod School of Color. Hensche studied under an American Impressionist painter Charles Hawthorne whose artistic lineage stemmed from Claude Monet.

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life." ~ Pablo Picasso.

Artistic Influences:

The "Hawthorne-Hensche Principle".

Sergei Bongart, a Russian colorist.

The Impressionists in general and their depiction of the vibrancy of nature and light.

Pop Art, as it celebrates commonplace objects and everyday life to elevate it into fine art form.

Art Deco- a design style that was elegant, glamorous and functional. It's use of geometric shapes, streamlined forms and bright, sometimes garish colors. The profound influence it had in creative design in general is enormous.
