A few people have emailed me asking for some bird photography tips and tricks of the trade. After some thought on the subject, I have come up with the following 10 tips for photographing birds.

Practice with the Locals. The best way to become familiar with photographing birds in your own backyard. What birds can you photograph at home? Do you have a birdfeeder or birdbath set up in your yard to draw birds in? Use these local birds to see behaviors such as how close you can get before they spook, and whether they eat at the feeder or take the food to somewhere nearby to enjoy it. Start by photographing birds in your yard to get used to their movements and feeding habits.

Timing is everything. Most species of birds eat in the morning or late afternoon. Get to know the habits of the bird that you are photographing and where it returns every day to feed.

Walk softly. Learn how to approach birds quietly and with very little movement. This goes for all wildlife photography.

Be respectful of nature. When photographing a bird, or photographing any wildlife, never corner the animal. Be mindful that the bird has a way of escape if it gets scared. This helps to ensure that the bird does not begin to fear all humans because of one disrespectful one.

Be wary of the weather. If the weather is threatening, the birds will tuck themselves where they will be safe from the weather. It may be best to just try another day.

Know what you want. Study bird photographs. Most bird photographs were the result of countless hours of waiting, and perhaps returning for several days to the same location that the bird frequents. If the image that you seek is of an Osprey catching a fish, the odds are very small that you will just happen upon that opportunity and get it, especially with the perfect light and background.

Do not chase. It sometimes is hard to finally see the bird that you want to photograph and not chase it around wildly. Be conscious of your movements and the signals that you giving to the animal. If you act frantic, don’t you think that the bird will too?

Behaviors make the best bird photographs. Photograph birds doing natural movements such as pruning, bathing, or feeding make for much more interesting photographs than a bird sitting on a wall.

Prepare in advance. When you know where you are going, and when the bird will be there, it is easy to get a chair and tripod set up so that you are ready to photograph the bird when it arrives. Do your homework.

Be patient! I always have to reiterate this with new wildlife photographers. The bird is not going to arrive and ask for its photo to be taken! It is a blessing when the opportunity for a great photograph happens. Appreciate it!

  • What Is Pack Shot Photography

Retail and commerce companies in Yorkshire use pack shot photography extensively to promote their products and services, both online and in printed literature. The term has become synonymous with commercial photography for advertisers.

A pack shot, or packshot, is a still or animated photographed image, usually including labelling and packaging, which is used to advertise a product. Pack shot photography is a lucrative way to increase revenue for both the merchandiser and the commercial photographer. Done with flair, it will promote a products reputation, stimulate sales and trigger recognition of the item both on and off the shelf. It also gives the customer important details about the product, especially if 360 degree pack shot photography is used.

Pack shot photography requires a high degree of trust between the photographer and their client. In the past, forged and leaked packshots have led to damaged reputations and court cases. Of all the forms of commercial photography there are, packshots probably require the highest level of security and confidentiality.

    Types of packshot photography

A packshot can be as simple as a photograph of the product on a white background, or as elaborate as a short, stop-motion animated movie. Commercial photography is almost entirely digital these days, which has opened up realms of possibilities, with a wealth of professional software available to photographers.

For example, lets look at the centre of Leeds. Packshot photography can be seen wherever you look, advertising foodstuffs, cleaning products, mobile phones, jewellery, toys, motor vehicles and more.

Packshot photography isnt limited to brochures, posters and magazines. As well as company websites, packshot images can be seen on t-shirts, ties, and sides of buses. Once the packshot has been digitally rendered, it can be used on anything that will take a printed or projected image.

    Packshot photography for websites

Website packshots are always taken on a white background. They are purchased as packs of 20 or more images, in 2 or more sizes. Once complete, the pack is delivered to the customer in either file format or via their content management system. Some commercial photography companies offer a full media service, while others just supply the shots, leaving the customer to do the post-production work themselves.

360 packshots are a form of online commercial photography allowing the customer to view the item from all angles as they would in a store. Used on objects of all sizes, it can incorporate zooming techniques and other innovations. Another option is stop motion animation photography, which is widely used on products with moving parts, such as kitchen gadgets and motor cars.

    High resolution pack shot photography

Commercial photography is still most often associated with printed media. Professional photographers today can offer digitally enhanced, high resolution packshots for catalogues, brochures and promotional leaflets, as well as for newspapers and magazines.

Packshot photography for print publications usually involves a clipping path. Produced using professional digital software, the photographer will shoot onto a plain white or coloured backdrop and then snip round the image, allowing it to be used on an infinite number of backgrounds. The same image can therefore be used on both the companys print literature and its website.

  • The Need To Develop A Niche In Microstock Photography

Initially, when are first accepted the tendency is to submit everything you shoot to the library. Not a bad idea to quickly build up your portfolio and start earning. However, pre-judge each image for size, quality and content. In other words edit you submission carefully. Then once you have uploaded every saleable image on your hard drive start to think about making your mark by creating a niche.

What you have to do is simply take stock of the images that you can shoot and they will sell. The more clearly defined the niche the easier it is to establish. From my website you will gather that I shoot property. Basically because I came from a construction background and the subjects were all around me. And they are fairly good sellers.

Landscapes is a niche, but it is oversubscribed. You need to specialise further. I know a photographer that specialises in Steam trains. Another photographer I know, shoots amazing landscapes mainly in the Yorkshire Dales. After a while, because they make regular submissions on the subject, they are classed as experts in their field. I have had request for interior images from buyers after they have viewed my portfolio.

So you need to assess you interests, potential sales and how easily you can shoot the subject. I’m not going to tell you shoot only subjects for your niche. But shooting for your niche gives your photography a direction. Instead of sat there, with a mental block, wondering what to shoot today, you will have an idea based on your niche. Of course whilst out shooting fresh images you will then come across photo opportunities to add to your portfolio.

So how do you decide your niche?

Well I looked at the picture opportunities around me. I have always worked in construction, so that an obvious choice I suppose. So the first thing to do is to look at the niches already available to you. Look at your other hobbies and interests. You may have a neighbour, friend or relation that has an unusual hobby or occupation. You may be a collector of antiques or live in a large city.

The best thing to do is sit down and make a list. And I don’t me a general list, I mean a specific list. For example don’t write landscapes, write down ‘North Yorkshire Moors’. You may know a Dentist; this would be an excellent opportunity. Medical subjects always sell well.

Once you have a good idea about your niche, make a few searches in the Libraries. I tend to search iStock as it gives you an accurate number of views and downloads. You can also put them in order of popularity so you can see instantly the best sellers.

Developing a niche will improve your photography as you will focus on the chosen subject and come up with more creative ideas. But that won’t stop you shooting and submitting other subjects and allow you to build up your portfolio. You can also develop more than one niche and see what subjects sell the best. Personally I find it better to test your ideas before throwing yourself into one particular subject.

The beauty of the Microstock Market is that you can test and experiment and it costs nothing to try. So sit down and make that list. It’s amazing what subjects you will come up with!

  • How To Get Tack Sharp Photographs – A Digital Photography Tip

Comments Off on How To Get Tack Sharp Photographs – A Digital Photography Tip
    May 1, 2021 /  Photography and Models

Did you ever ask yourself how professional photographers get their photographs so sharp and have you wondered how you can do it yourself? Their images are so crisp, so sharp! If they can do it you must be able to do it to, right? So how can you do it?
A couple of years ago when I just started out with photography I was wondering how to do this. Everybody can take a more or less sharp picture, but to take a extremely sharp photograph takes some knowledge. This extreme level is known as tack sharp. If you take a tack sharp photo then you’ve taken an image with the absolute best sharpness. How do you do this?
A couple factors determine if your photographs are going to be tack or not:

Digital photography tip #1: the use of tripods

Some people don’t really like tripods. They can be quite cumbersome. Tripods can be annoying because they are heavy and if you are taking pictures outside they can hold you back quite a bit.
What they can do, however, is get you to that tack level sharpness. With this level of sharpness there can be absolutely no movement or it will result in a fuzzy image

Digital photography tip #2: The use of timers

Use a timer as much as possible. This will further eliminate any movement that might be caused when you take a picture. Although this will greatly improve the quality of your images, it will slow you down even more.

    Digital photography tip #3: Lenses

If you have a good lens then your image will be sharper in most cases. The downside is that good lenses cost a lot of money and if you don’t have a lot of cash to spend this point won’t help you as much. The Digital single-lens reflex cameras of today usually come with a standard lens (probably an 18mm to 55mm). While these are great to start with they aren’t the best when it comes to quality, as it has a lot of moving parts in it and good zoom lenses cost a lot. Don’t let this discourage you though. If your names isn’t Rockefeller and you don’t swim in pools of cash there are other ways to get that absolute clarity.

    Digital photography tip #4: Aperture

Two stops down from wide open is when your lens is at it’s sharpest. Take the 18mm 55mm lens for example. When you put the aperture at about f/8 then your photograph is going to be sharper then with an aperture of f/3,5.

Digital photography tip #5: Shutter speed

Shorter shutter speeds reduce the chance of getting any motion blur. If there’s one thing that messes up tack sharp images, it’s motion blur. So what are good speeds? Flowers don’t move a lot, so a shutter speed of 1/250 might be able to do the trick. A car or an athlete on the other hand is going to need a shutter speed of 1/2000 or more. The rule of thumb is: The faster your subject is moving the faster your shutter speed needs to be.

Now you have the knowledge to create super sharp images. The next thing you need to do is going out and try these techniques. The main thing that you need to keep in mind is to reduce motion blur.

  • The Photographer Of The Negative Space Composition On Photography

    April 26, 2021 /  Photography and Models

Maybe now you are preparing for a photography project. Engaged in a photography project really help improve the personal photography technology. In this paper, we discuss a photography technology–the negative space composition.

Negative space is a kind of can create attractive photos of composition skills. If used properly, it can greatly improve the level of photos.

In one picture, there are 3 kinds of composition elements:

1, the frame: frame is the ZhiHua outside edge.

2, is space: namely photo subject, is usually camera focus areas.

Three, the negative space: in addition to the main body of the outside screen space, space and frame is located in between.

Many people consider composition, too much attention is space, and less consider the negative space of the problem. Even if it was considered, and is often taken in after noticed. This way can only make the second-class photos. If can reasonable use, negative space can play two very important function:

    1. The negative space can help determine is space;

    2. Negative space is space can assist, strengthen is the attraction of the space.

Negative space through the arrange other details to help determine is space. For example, a photograph may only took a part of the bridge. But in a negative space have other details, can be used to judge the specific location of the bridge. It is in the city, city park or in the forest? Photo taken in nearly unable to answer these questions. If the photographer to show some scenery, create can determine the negative space is space. Therefore, the picture is also better.

Make the negative space, can play a role of the photos to strengthen, but one thing is must avoid: negative space can never is more marked than space, otherwise, it will destroy photos.

Highlight is space is negative space of another effect, because the negative space can be used to control the audience’s attention. Realize that the method is to lead to positive view of the people on the space, such as negative space for lack of details (may produce no details of the risk).

In short, whether positive and negative space in consideration composition should be taken into consideration when. The importance of both are the same, and should be treated equally. Do this will help to improve your photography level.

  • Whitewashing In Fashion Industry Where Have The Black Models Gone

Comments Off on Whitewashing In Fashion Industry Where Have The Black Models Gone
    April 22, 2021 /  Photography and Models

Ever felt, why there was a relative absence of black fashion models in the recent fashion week? No doubt, its true that the cut throat competition brews in between the model agencies for searching for the most glamorous fashion models, with the best of poses, head shots and beauty. But with innumerable white models, walking down the ramp, its definitely getting difficult for black women to mark their advent, unlike as they did during the late seventies.

So, does race play a pivotal role in deciding the career prospects of this tempting fashion industry? Are the days of black celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede and Donyale Luna, finally over? Sadly, these questions reveal some hard and bitter truths. On one hand, black fashion wear might have appeared as a style statement, but sadly on the other hand, the entire fashion bustle is perhaps undergoing a complete white wash. Long back, Ms Mendoza happened to be the first black woman to be crowned as Ms Columbia in 2002. But no other black woman could repeat history again.

Earlier, the black fashion models used to grace the cover of more than hundreds of magazines like Hapers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Vogue. Fashion models like Waris Dirie, had even modeled for Express jeans and Chanel. Along with the top model agencies, even the advertising giants like Tommy Hilfiger and Abercrombie & Fitch hired these black models. Several international fashion magazines, fashion model portfolios, commercials and catwalks featured the budding black models that had literally set the bestowed platforms on fire, with their cuts, curves and figures.

But nowadays, the so-called universal fashion models agency poses challenging situations for the black women. The number of black women chosen by the glamorous model agency has dramatically decreased. Now, even the fashion aficionados rejoice upon seeing a black face in the fashion magazine. So is it deliberate discrimination or not? No doubt, around twelve percent of the world population includes black people, but are these statistics enough to confront the selection of the models in any international model agency? Perhaps not!

Earlier when fashion commenced into an industrial platform, it started with the selling of clothes and creating vigor, dash and genre for fashion hunters. But now, it has drooped to the business of selling beauty. Somehow, the international designers feel that black women cannot portray the stereotyped image of beauty. Sadly, they don’t realise that their expensive attires are also worn by these black beauties.

  • Creative Photography – 3 Experiments To Have Fun With

Comments Off on Creative Photography – 3 Experiments To Have Fun With
    April 21, 2021 /  Photography and Models

Though many people dont realize it, photographs are a vastly flexible art medium. You should never feel limited to only taking pictures of the obvious or capturing reality as it stands. Like with any art form, there is lots of room to influence and create your own unique photographs. So, let’s talk about several fun things you can do with your pictures that you may not normally consider.

    1. Change Your Angle
One of the things that almost every photograph youve ever seen of your family or friends has in common is that its taken at the same height as your head. While it makes sense why most photos are taken at head level, it may not be the best angle for what you’re trying to shoot.

Take a day and shoot pictures entirely from the ground or knee level and see how the different height will completely change your pictures. If you’re feeling lucky, try taking a group of pictures from your waist without checking the focus or the frame and see what you get.

    2. Push Your Film
All film has a recommended development time at any given temperature. For instance, when developing 400 speed film in chemicals that are 70 degrees, you would allow the film to soak for 7 minutes before rinsing it (this is in no way a recommendation or a standard, check with your developer and film manufacturers for the recommended times). What many people may not realize is that the longer you allow the film to develop, the more stark the contrast gets. The lights get lighter and the darks get darker.

If you are lucky enough to develop your own film, try “pushing your film” or increasing the the development time by 2 or 3 minutes and see how it changes your print. While its certainly possible to push your film into an over-contrasty oblivion, a little extra push can sometimes create incredible results and help draw the important parts of your images out.

    3. Use the Bulb Setting
Any film (and most digital) cameras with manual settings will give you the choice to set your shutter speed to bulb or “B.”. This simply makes your camera shutter stay open for as long as you keep the button pressed and gives you a way to capture images that seemed impossible. Unfortunately the bulb setting won’t work in daylight since it will overexpose the image, but in a dark environment it can create lots of new photo opportunities.

Set your camera on a tripod facing the night sky and use a cable release to leave your shutter open for five minutes youll be able to see the stars moving as the earth rotates. You can also hold the shutter open while a friend dances around with a flashlight then snap a flash before closing it and youll have a perfect shot of them surrounded by streams of light. This setting requires a lot of practice and experimentation but can often have tremendous results.

The next time you’re feeling adventurous, remember these three photo experiments. For these experiments all you need is a cable release and a single lens reflex (SLR) camera or a digital SLR (DSLR) camera and you’re all set. Just remember that you should only do experiments with photographs youre willing to lose your daughters wedding might not be the best time to try shooting everything from the hip. At the end of the day all that matters is that you have fun and create images that are beautiful, truthful, and important to you.
